How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

May 11, 2026 · 6 min read · UpDay Constructions LLC

Find out how often you should clean your gutters in Texas. UpDay Constructions explains the recommended frequency for DFW homeowners and the warning signs to watch for.

The Standard Rule for Gutter Cleaning Frequency

If you’re a homeowner in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, you’ve probably wondered: how often should you clean your gutters? The answer isn’t the same for everyone — and in Texas, the answer is almost always “more often than you think.”

At UpDay Constructions LLC, we service gutters across Irving, Arlington, Fort Worth, and the surrounding DFW Metroplex. We see the same pattern every season: homeowners wait too long between cleanings, and by the time they call us, the damage has already started.

This guide gives you a clear answer for how often to clean your gutters in Texas — and what factors specific to your yard change that number.

For most homes in the United States, the recommendation is to clean your gutters at least twice a year — once in the spring and once in the fall.

But in Texas, and especially in the DFW Metroplex, twice a year is the minimum. Many homes here need cleaning 3 to 4 times per year due to:

  • Heavy oak and pecan tree coverage, common in North Texas neighborhoods

  • Spring storm season (March–May) dropping debris and causing overflow

  • Summer heat that bakes debris into gutters, creating dense blockages

  • Fall leaf drop from large shade trees that continues into December

How Texas Weather Changes the Equation

North Texas has a unique climate that affects gutter cleaning frequency more than most homeowners realize.

Spring (March–May) brings heavy rain and storms. If your gutters are  full of winter debris, they overflow during these storms — sending water  toward your foundation exactly when rainfall is highest. This is the  most critical cleaning window of the year.

Summer (June–August) is drier, but the heat bakes any debris left in  the gutters into a compact mass that is harder to remove. Gutters with standing debris also become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and pests.

Fall (September–November) is the second most important cleaning window.  Live oak trees in DFW drop leaves later than in northern states, often through December. A fall cleaning — ideally in November or early  December — clears the gutters before winter arrives.

Winter (December–February) in DFW is mild but can bring ice storms. Clogged gutters during a freeze can lead to ice dams — heavy formations that pull gutters away from the fascia board.

For most homes in the United States, the recommendation is to clean your gutters at least twice a year — once in the spring and once in the fall.

Factors That Increase How Often You Should Clean Your Gutters

Beyond the Texas climate, several factors specific to your home determine whether you need cleanings more frequently.

  • Trees Over or Near Your Roof
  • Roof Pitch and Size
  • Gutter Guards

Recommended Gutter Cleaning Schedule for DFW Homeowners

Based on what we see servicing homes across the Metroplex, here is the schedule we recommend:

March–April: Clean before spring storm season begins

July (optional): Mid-year check for homes with heavy tree coverage

November–December: Clean after leaf fall, before winter.

If your home has minimal tree coverage and no history of clogs, twice  a year is sufficient. If you have significant tree coverage or have had overflow problems before, three to four times a year is the right frequency.

Warning Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning Now

Regardless of your schedule, watch for these signs that your gutters need immediate attention:

• Water overflowing during rain, even light rain

• Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia board

• Visible plants, moss, or dirt buildup inside the gutter channel

• Water pooling near your foundation after storms

• Staining or streaking on your siding below the gutters

• Birds or pests nesting in the gutter line

If you notice any of these, don’t wait for your next scheduled cleaning. Overflowing gutters can damage your foundation, rot your fascia board, and cause interior water damage — all of which cost far more than a cleaning visit.

Even with gutter guards installed, plan to clean your gutters at least once a year. Guards block large debris but fine particles — pollen, shingle grit, seed pods — still accumulate inside the channel. An annual inspection ensures the guards are functioning correctly and that downspouts are not developing blockages.

Yes — DFW winters are mild enough that gutter cleaning is possible year-round. If you missed the fall cleaning window, a winter cleaning before any freeze events is better than waiting until spring. Avoid cleaning during or immediately after ice storms.

For homes with minimal tree coverage, once yearly may be sufficient. But for most DFW homes — especially those with oak or pecan trees nearby — once yearly leads to partial blockages that cause overflow during heavy rains. The risk is water damage to your foundation and fascia board, which costs significantly more than an extra cleaning visit.
